Norfolk Island’s colourful history belies its sleepy paradise with a past steeped in cruelty and bloodshed. Located in Norfolk’s capital, the Historic Kingston Precinct is situated on Norfolk’s southern extremity and is the island’s most significant historical site. Home of the first convict settlement, it is where the construction of infrastructure began. Turning left, follow the road straight ahead down Beefsteak Road. To your right you’ll see Longridge House where you can relive bygone days over a meal or Devonshire tea. Continuing to follow Country Road, head right and stop for a visit at Watermill Dam then keep going down Jemima Robinson Avenue past the pines that commemorate her years. When you reach the Commissariat Store, turn right and follow Pier Street to the jetty and imagine being a Pitcairner setting eyes on your new home all the way back in Coming to the heart of old Kingston Town, allow plenty of time to explore this scarcely changed 19th century village, visit the 4 museums and enjoy lunch at the Royal Engineers’ Office. The infamous pentagonal prison and its terrible hospital can still be seen today along with the Crankmill.

T he name Nobbs is carved deep in the heart of Norfolk Island. The pioneer of the clan, George Hunn Nobbs, an Irishman who claimed to be the illegitimate son of the Marquis of Hastings, arrived there in as the pastor, schoolmaster and doctor of a shipload of refugees from Pitcairn Island, descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian women. There are 24 of them in the flimsy phone book, among the 1, other residents.
And one has just brought the deepest disgrace imaginable to his family and his ancestral island home.

Norfolk Island’s iconic pines attracted Captain Cook, who thought they could be used to make masts for ships. For several decades the tiny population of Norfolk Island were self-sufficient and self-governing. But the final steps to make them ordinary Australian citizens will take place on 1 July and, as Keri Phillips reports, not everyone is happy about it. Ever since the descendants of the Bounty mutineers made Norfolk Island their home, there has been debate about the independence of the island.
While the people there have long considered their home an independent nation, the history of whether they were granted full ownership is murky. Captain Cook was the first European to visit Norfolk Island in , and when Governor Phillip arrived in Sydney with the first fleet in , he sent Lieutenant Philip Gidley King almost immediately to set up a penal colony there. By the early 19th century, the penal colony was closed, but there were problems on another small island, Pitcairn, where the descendants of the mutineers on the Bounty were struggling.
Peter Maywald, who was Norfolk Island’s secretary to the government from , says the Pitcairners all moved across in Over the years the administration of Norfolk was handed between New South Wales and the Federal Government, until in the s a Royal Commission recommended it be completely absorbed into Australia. But, Maywald says, the locals weren’t happy with that. They communicated their feelings in no uncertain terms to then home affairs minister Bob Ellicott, who quite surprisingly agreed to make them self-governing.
After the passing of the Norfolk Island Act, a legislative assembly—similar to one that governs the ACT—was established.

Photographs by Susan Prior. Norfolk Island, unwittingly perhaps, is probably the last bastion of the small but defiant concrete or metal yellow domes installed at road intersections known colloquially as silent cops. Someone will remember. All around Australia, these devices have been winkled out, a relic from a quieter and slower past. I work as a writer and an editor, and one of the tools I often use when editing books is the Ngram Viewer. Words come in and out of fashion and change their meanings all the time.
Neither are to be confused with a sleeping policeman or cop , which is a speed bump across the whole or part of a road. Silent cops replaced the real flesh-and-blood variety, who would have stood in the middle of intersections directing traffic and making sure everyone obeyed the rules and stayed on the correct side of the road. Some readers may have heard of the world-wide tech-phenomenon called Geocaching, a modern-day version of hide and seek using handheld GPS devices.
Participants find hidden caches and then log the coordinates of their finds onto a website. Therein Norfolk Island gets a mention.
